Solar milk tank

The FREECOLD solar-powered milk tank is designed to preserve milk in sunny areas that are poorly connected to the electric grid. It can perfectly adapt to the climatic conditions present in Sub-Saharan Africa in particular. In this way it fully participates in the development of the production of quality local milk and to increase farmers’ incomes in the face of European competition.

With a capacity of 330 liters, our solar milk tank can store about two milkings enough time to process or sell the milk. Its thermal insulation and its high cooling capacity allow it to cool the volume of a 125 L milking to a temperature of 4°C within 2 hours, with a 35°C outside temperature.

Special features

Our milk tank is powered:

  • During the day using a 2.5 kW photovoltaic solar power station
  • In the night and the days without sun via batteries stocking solar energy
  • A connection to the electric grid is possible if available

The FREECOLD electrical cabinet optimizes power management according to the power available at the input (PV, batteries, …), and output requirements (milk tank, battery charging). This guarantees a high quality power supply by prioritizing solar energy before using other sources.

Delivery and warranty

Our solar milk tank is delivered with its kit equipment. This includes:

  • The stainless steel milk tank and its refrigeration unit, delivered ready to install,
  • Photovoltaic solar panels of European origin and their fixings,
  • Solar lead batteries,
  • The electrical cabinet for management of the power supply,
  • Electrical wiring

Like all FREECOLD products, the solar panels benefit from a 25-year performance guarantee. Milk tanks are guaranteed for 1 year, parts and labor.

Technical characteristics

  • Rounded corners, polished welds and the stainless steel bowl guarantee hygiene and food safety.
  • A 45 mm insulation layer limits heat loss from the tank.
  • The stirring device of the milk makes it possible to homogenize the temperature and the fats in the whole tank, while nevertheless avoiding foaming.
  • 2,500 Wp of photovoltaic panels simultaneously ensure the operation of the cooling unit and the recharging of the batteries, thus guaranteeing the autonomy of the installation.
  • Batteries with a capacity of 11.5 kWh make it possible to smooth the intermittences of the solar source and to supply the system at night and on days without sun.
  • Openwork side panels allow the heat of the refrigeration unit to escape while preventing the intrusion of small animals and rodents inside the system.
  • 4 adjustable feet put the tank to the same level on uneven ground.
  • Complete emptying of the tank is possible using a stainless steel outlet valve.
  • A temperature controller ensures optimum milk storage conditions.

Solar pasteurizer

To preserve milk for a long time, the best solution is pasteurization. Without it, food waste and financial losses are almost inevitable, especially for farmers without access to the electricity grid. This is why FREECOLD has developed a pasteurizer powered 100% by solar energy.

Pasteurization requires heat treatment of the milk. Our pasteurizer performs this function without involving a solar installation that is too heavy and expensive. Indeed, its 2 kW allow it to bring milk to a configurable temperature of up to 95°C without needing too much power.

In addition, the solar pasteurizer is easily attached to the FREECOLD milk tank. This pooling of resources makes it possible to limit the surfaces of solar panels and the number of batteries.

Special features

  • All stainless steel, the milk tank with a total capacity of 60 liters has a smooth inner wall, rounded corners and polished welds for optimal conditions of hygiene and food safety.
  • Milk heating and cooling is done in a water bath by water circulation in the double wall of the pasteurizer.
  • The heating unit is coupled to the electronic control panel for easy regulation of the pasteurization process.
  • The stirring device of the milk makes it possible to homogenize the temperature and the fats in the whole of the tank.
  • Complete emptying of the tank is possible using a stainless steel outlet valve.
  • A temperature controller with immersed sensor guarantees optimal pasteurisation conditions.
  • The pasteurizer comes with 6 photovoltaic modules to increase the power of the FREECOLD milk tank solar plant. The pooling of available energy between the pasteurizer and the milk tank gives access to the solar batteries of the tank to smooth the intermittences of the solar source.

With a capacity of 350 liters, this cheese ripening cabinet is the ideal complement to our milk tank to add value to milk production in isolated sites. It makes it possible to ripen cheese on 7 shelves under optimal conditions of temperature and hydrometry.
